Service Description

* Are you new to open water swimming and wanting to learn more? * Are you wanting to give outdoor swimming a go but need a little bit of confidence to step in the water? We know the water can seem deep, scary or cold so we want to help you try something new and fall in love with outdoor swimming like we have! This bank based session will be informative teaching you on the dangers of outdoor swimming and how to do it safely when you are at the lake or even elsewhere. It will touch on information such as cold water shock, hypovolemic shock, hypothermia and hyperthermia and heat stroke and the signs to look out for and how to help yourself. We are aware we are not tidal but equally we will touch on rip tides too. This session also includes a swim, where you can put what you learned into practice and get to enjoy the sights and sounds of the lake. You will find the moorhens and coots competing with your stroke or diving to surprise you. the ducks and geese are friendly and inquisitive in your bag, so ensure food is behind a zip. A tow float is included for your swim. What to bring? We get it, you don't want to bring the beach to the lake but packing for a swim is similar (especially in the winter). We have no changing facilities so a big towel (or confidence) is a must. feel free to come ready in your costume/ shorts (a wetsuit is optional, and not recommended when the water is over 18°c if you are planning on training (as in line with British Tri). A big bag, much like a bag for life or an IKEA bag, this is so you can pop your clothes in, in the order you want to put them back on, and you can grab them easily. (nobody wants the clothes hunt faff where you make all of your clothes wet in the process). Lastly, an extra layer for after your swim. The weather may be warm but after a swim in the lake you may find yourself cold and will be thankful you packed a jumper. Finally Reef safe suncream, especially if you plan to bob or head up breaststroke. Please wear weather appropriate clothing for your bank based course. Give yourself up to 2 hours for the course, 45 min for the induction followed by an hours opportunity to swim. This course is not compulsory to swim in the lake. This course does NOT allow you to swim when the water is below 15 degrees.
